From “The Monarch of Key West”, pg. 46

The sandwich shop was mostly empty.  We ordered our lunches and then looked around.  In the corner, dressed in a flowered shirt and a pair of clam diggers sat Louis Of Robideau.  Our eyes met over his newspaper.  I wasn’t sure how seriously anyone took his  monarchy, but out of respect I inclined my head slightly.  He appeared to be pleased with the deference, and smiled.  Then he turned his attention back to the paper.

Our sandwiches arrived.  While we ate, Louis Of Robideau arose, paid his bill and stopped by our table.  “Master Aidan, welcome back to the island.  The first Lord of the Admiralty told us that you might be returning soon.”

I decided there was no harm in playing along.  “Yes Sire.  It’s good to be back.  These are my roommates, Tony and Scot.”

Louis inclined his head.  “Gentlemen.  We welcome you to the Conch Republic.  We hope you will, at some point in the future, avail yourselves to visiting us at court.”

Scot looked slightly amused.  Tony, who truly lives up the title accountant, was definitely taken aback.  “Uh, what?”

Louis smiled.  I interceded and told him, “We would certainly enjoy that, Sire.”

Good, we will look forward to it.  Until then, gentlemen.“  He left the sandwich shop.

"What in the hell was that all about?"  Tony asked around a mouth full of falafel.  I explained to him the whole story of the Conch Republic Government in Exile and the role their somewhat addled monarch played.  Scot found it very interesting.  Tony expressed his hope that the monarch did not have free and easy access to our house.

And that evening, after we had all showered and cleaned up, we decided to participate in one of Key West’s most respected traditions.
